Most patients face the need for a dental filling at some point during their lives.
At Jeff Leech Family Dentistry, we take great pride in providing our patients with fillings that protect your tooth without leaving a mark on your smile.
What Causes Tooth Decay
You have probably heard the advice to avoid sugary snacks if you want to avoid tooth decay. It’s true that the bacteria that cause decay love to feed on sugar, their favorite fuel. That is only part of the story, however.
Since decay actually comes from the acidic environment created by bacteria, it is important to understand that acidic drinks such as energy drinks, sports drinks, and sugary fruit juices also contribute to decay. Additionally, starchy snacks that stick in your teeth provide efficient fuel for bacteria.
If you want to learn more about how a healthy diet can protect your teeth, we are happy to share our knowledge with you. Our hygiene department is passionate about helping patients protect their smiles.
For many years, the only option for filling a cavity was a dark amalgam (metal) filling. Amalgams are functional but have a few drawbacks:
- They require the removal of healthy tooth structure to create an anchor in your tooth.
- They are also susceptible to expanding and contracting with temperature changes in your mouth, putting your tooth at risk of fracture.
- Over time, the amalgam can darken the appearance of your entire tooth and give it a gray hue.
Tooth-colored fillings bond to your tooth and require us to remove only the diseased portion of your tooth to create a seal. This means that we can retain more of your healthy tooth during the filling process.
Since tooth-colored fillings are a mixture of BPA-free plastic and glass particles, they are not reactive to temperature changes. Their appearance is also natural and comes in a variety of shades to match your existing tooth.
How Tooth-Colored Fillings Work
Dr. Leech will clear your tooth of decay and choose a composite that closely matches the natural shade of your tooth. He will apply the composite in layers and harden the material with a special curing light. Once he applies the final layers, he will shape and polish your composite, making it appear seamless with your smile. The untrained eye will never notice you have had a filling!
Composite fillings offer esthetics and durability! Because fillings are so common, we believe they should never negatively impact the beauty of your smile.
